Seriously. Why is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) so important?

That’s a great question. The answer to why SEO is so important lies in how technology has evolved, Google’s searchability, and being at the right digital place at the right digital time.

Out with old. In with the new.

Gone are the days when people pull out the clunky yellow pages to find needed goods and services. Google has taken the place of what is now a door stopper. Heck, Google is even a verb. That’s the answer to everyone’s question and pain point: “Google It”

People consult Google for everything so it makes good business sense to understand how SEO works in the Google-verse, and how you can work with it. You want people to choose you when they search for your goods or services and having the best SEO tactics and strategies in place will get you one step closer to getting in front of your ideal clients.

SEO vs. social media

But there are other factors that I’m sure you’ve considered. You’ve probably asked yourself, “Why is SEO so important when I have great social media content? Do I need both?”

While there are great ways to use both in your digital marketing plan, I argue that SEO wins the race when it comes to which is more important right now. Social media is a great way to discover brands, but when people go to Google to get answers, SEO is more important to your strategy. Bottom line: Social media is great, but it’s not Google-able.

Get it now!

With digital speed as it is, we are used to getting what we want relatively quickly. All things digital now equate to instant gratification. The faster the better. When a potential client is looking and ready to buy, they want to do so now. Waiting is a thing of the past. People aren’t searching on Google pages 2 and 3 for answers. Nope. Whatever pops up on the first page, usually in the top three, that’s what consumers are choosing when it comes to their split-second buying decisions.

I want you to be in that top 3 so you’re chosen. That’s why SEO is so important to your business!

SEO is so important for businesses that I’m going to give you 3 best practices you can start today. Just remember this: SEO doesn’t have to be super complicated!

  1. Create a Google My Business account and Business Profile. This is Google’s way of verifying your business. This is a great way to take advantage of local SEO results. Ask yourself, “Are people searching for my goods and services locally?” If so, Google My Business is where you need to be.
  1. On-Page SEO – Keywords, Alt text, and links, oh my! On-page SEO is how you tell Google what your website/business is all about and how you can help people who are searching. This should be quality over quantity. It only takes an average of 1 post/piece of content (Done Right) per month to drive SEO. That’s totally doable!

  1. Off-Page SEO – Backlinks from other websites are the most heavily weighted. The question is: Where can you offer value to others websites or causes? Writing content that helps other people’s causes or adds value to their audience is a great way to get quality backlinks.

Backlink tip: Press Releases are a great way to get backlinks ($25 on fiverr.com gets you 250 outlets)
